First, Obsidian is not a rock, stone or crystal. Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass formed as an extrusive igneous rock. Aka, it is made from liquid hot magma. When felsic lava comes out of a volcano and cools rapidly with minimal growth the resulting glass is obsidian. It is most comprised of Silica (“rock crystal”).
There are many kinds of Obsidian Such as Golden, Mahogany, and Snowflake

Obsidian has been used in the ancient times because it can be fractured conveniently to produce knives and sharp blades. Indeed, symbolically this stone works like a knife, penetrating the heart of the problem.
Black Obsidian is a very powerful and creative stone. It increases self-control. It forces facing up to one’s true self. Releases imbalances and negative energies. Black Obsidian is protective and provides support during change. It repels negativity and disperses unloving thoughts.
Black Obsidian is a very useful tool to clean your aura and energy, it also offers a strong psychic protection. It can heal traumas and negative emotions from our numerous past lives that we have been unable to release and is very useful as a tool in energy work.
My notes on it
Obsidian is a little intense for starters, so if you would like to start working with it I suggest Snowflake Obsidian as it is less intense and has the same qualities
